Throwback to the first #admintechsummit

The very first year that I was at my current job, I was asked to present with some colleagues on the basics of social media. It was a very positive experience.

I remember thinking it was crazy because I was pretty new to the District still – why were they asking me to help? My age and knowledge of social media had never been a point of value at past jobs.

The first presentation was so nerve wracking for me… I didn’t present to large rooms of people. I wasn’t an authority on something. Little did I know that a short time later I would be assisting in what became a three year journey to help in the creation of a new social media policy, social media standards for schools, and a whole eLearning course.

That first class was just going over basic pieces. What’s a personal account, a professional account, an account for you school. What are the basic do’s and don’ts for when you’re posting. How do you set up a twitter.

This one class evolved over the years to presenting on hashtags, tagging, and digital citizenship.

I knew when I graduated college and my first job within my field, I was so focused on social media and how it worked within the company that I wanted it to be part of my job in the long run, but I never imagined it would be this part. I’m so lucky that I can help others understand this digital world that is quickly becoming (it already is) the same as our reality.
