Inspiration

I’ve pulled inspiration from so many different sources, yet one that I would say stands above the rest is Sophia Coppla’s Marie Antionette. The story of Marie Antionette is a sad one, as arranged marriages go, there was little love and the new ruler was seen as a strange outsider. The movie directed by Sophia Coppla gives you the coldness, but with this whimsical nature where it feels fun. From the colors, to the music, every piece of that film made me fall in love.

I very much wanted this show and the pieces within it give those moments of true wonderment, but also have a sadness or heaviness to them. I choose to use a color scheme that was based off of the rooms that Marie Antionette decorated within Versaille.

The other inspiration, held from my original idea, was to utilize clouds within my pieces. Clouds are oftentimes used to showcase dreamy states, or delusion or dissociation. For many years I was dealing with dissociation and didn’t realize it. Only after deconstructing my own beliefs, concepts, and feelings on the situation was I able to truly look in the mirror and see myself as I am, a nonbinary person. Since these pieces all reflect current and past, I wanted to include that hazy element, making things feel and seem a bit more surreal.
